Kaufland launches ecommerce in French marketplace
German e-commerce giant Kaufland has officially launched its marketplace in France, making it the sixth country where the platform operates. French customers can now browse and order over three million products across more than 6,400 categories on the newly launched platform.
As a hypermarket chain under the Schwarz Group, Kaufland has been steadily expanding its European footprint. Following its entry into Austria last year, the company announced plans in April 2025 to launch in Italy and France. With the French launch now realized, the Italian rollout is scheduled for late summer.
A key focus of Kaufland’s French expansion is to facilitate cross-border sales for sellers. French retailers using the platform can not only target domestic customers but also reach 81 million online shoppers across Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, and Austria. To simplify cross-border trading, Kaufland offers support services such as translating product data and legal documents, along with personalized retailer assistance.
The platform has already gained significant traction in France, with 2,800 local online sellers signing up ahead of or shortly after the launch. Kaufland estimates it will reach 37 million potential online customers in France and 22 million in Italy, bringing its total reachable online shoppers across Europe to approximately 140 million.
Gerald Schönbucher, CEO of Kaufland e-commerce, noted the strong interest in the new marketplace: “Both French and international retailers are eager to offer their products on our France platform.” He added that the company aims to provide French customers with a product range comparable to Germany’s—where 45 million items are already available—and position itself as the top European platform for French retailers, enabling seamless national and international sales.
Across Europe, Kaufland’s marketplace currently hosts 13,000 retailers, a number expected to grow as its presence in France and Italy solidifies.
